American Lives is a two-volume collection of forty-four biographical
essays of both well-known and lesser-known historical figures, each
chapter a succinct portrait of an important American. Selections
are based according to gender, ethnicity, geographical region and
historical period. Each essay begins with a brief consideration
of the historical context and concludes with provocative questions
for thought and discussion and suggestions for further reading.
Subjects of the biographies run the gamut of American experience
from politics to social activism to professional life to literature
and popular culture.
